World's Best Holiday Ads, Part 1

The holidays are like the Super Bowl in Britain. Retailers invest in extravagant commercials. The mainstream press covers each release. There's lots of buzz on social. And while there are several online collections of ALL of the ads, I'll do you the favor of sharing only the good ones. ;)

Starting with Waitrose, a British grocery store chain, who offers this first installment of a two-part comedy/mystery starring Matthew Macfadyen and some other actors Brits will recognize (but I didn't).

They're going all out to make this a multi-media campaign with social content with characters giving their alibis, "some of the nation's favourite detectives trying to help crack the case," a "suspect board" in a big train station, and Waitrose employees wearing "suspect" T-shirts.

The spot is directed well by Lucy Forbes, a BAFTA-winning TV series director, but I think the star of the production is the editor, Ellie Johnson.

Part two will be released in late November.

The Rules:

If there are multiple characters tying for last place, there will be a special elimination round. In these rounds, every character in last place will be eliminated, even if all the characters have tied equally.

When there are only two characters remaining, they will face off against one another in a week-long poll to determine the victor.

Benedict Cumberbatch was at Wilderness Festival this year for Letters Live. He took the opportunity to make a hbd video for his mother, Wanda Ventham, who turned 88. Before that, he did mention two others:

"I'm going to abuse my position of power of having a microphone in front of a lot of people and say, Sophie Hunter, I love you." "Can Lucy Forbes come backstage afterwards if she's here? You're amazing."

He's the sweetest.
